Acupuncture Point Combinations and the Eight Extraordinary Vessels: Regulating Emotions, Stress, and Mental Healthimmediately after purchasefor 2 years
    Presenter:

This is part 2 of the Acupuncture Point Combination series, which takes you on a journey through the Eight Extraordinary Vessels (Qí Jīng Bā Mài).

"These vessels are typically not taught thoroughly at Chinese medicine institutions and so it became clear to me that I needed to write a course that could access as many students and practitioners of our art as possible." ~ David Hartmann

    Module 1

    • Eight Extraordinary Vessels (EEV) introduction and history.
    • EEV history, overview, and function.
    • EEV function, when/how to use, warning, additional information, and references.

In module 1, the viewer is given the platform for part 2 of this webinar series which is on the Eight Extraordinary Vessels (EEV). Once part 2 has been introduced, the focus is the history of the EEV and relevant texts, both ancient and modern.

The viewer is then given a brief overview on the EEV before a more thorough analysis of their functions is included. The use/application of the EEV has been a debate for thousands of years and so we will discuss ways that you can use them, when to use them and how I use them.

Module 1 wraps up with a warning about the flippant use of the EEV.

    Module 2

    • Rèn Mài image, opening/coupled points, function, my thoughts, treatment 1.
    • Rèn Mài treatments 1-5, case study 1, Dū Mài image, opening/coupled points.
    • Dū Mài opening/coupled points, function, my thoughts, treatments 1-5, Rèn Mài and Dū Mài treated together, Dū Mài point combination activity, additional information and references.

Module 2 gives the viewer detailed information on the Rèn Mài and the Dū Mài. Included for each is a discussion on their image/vessel pathway, opening and coupled points (with the opening point analyzed in detail), functions, my thoughts and five acupuncture point combination treatments discussed. The Rèn Mài and Dū Mài are also discussed regarding using them together in the same treatment.

The Rèn Mài also has a case study included, whereas the Dū Mài has a point combination activity.

    Module 3

    • 0-30 minutes – Chōng Mài image, opening/coupled points, function and spirit gate.
    • Chōng Mài spirit gate, treatment and case studies 2-3.
    • Dài Mài image, opening/coupled points, function, treatments 1-2, additional information, and references.

Module 3 gives the viewer detailed information on the Chōng Mài and the Dài Mài. Included for each is a discussion on their image/vessel pathway, opening and coupled points (with the opening point analyzed in detail), and functions.

The Chōng Mài also includes a discussion on the spirit gate points, one treatment and two case studies.

The Dài Mài has two acupuncture point combination treatments analyzed.

    Module 4 (2 hours)

    • Qiāo Mài discussion; Yáng Qiāo Mài image, opening/coupled points, function, treatments 1-2.
    • Yáng Qiāo Mài treatment 2; Yīn Qiāo Mài image, opening/coupled points, function, treatments 1-2.
    • Yīn Qiāo Mài treatment 2; Wéi Mài discussion; Yáng Wéi Mài image, opening/coupled points, function, treatments 1-2.
    • Yáng Wéi Mài treatment 2; Yīn Wéi Mài image, opening/coupled points, function, treatments 1-2; additional information and references.

Module 4 gives the viewer detailed information on the Yáng Qiāo Mài, Yīn Qiāo Mài, Yáng Wéi Mài and the Yīn Wéi Mài. Included for each is a discussion on their image/vessel pathway, opening and coupled points (with the opening point analyzed in detail), and functions.

There are also two acupuncture point combination treatments analyzed for each of the vessels.

    Module 5

    • Using the Eight Extraordinary Vessels (EEV) for emotions and mental health; point combinations for emotions; anger.
    • Point combinations for anger and pensiveness.
    • Point combinations for pensiveness, worry, fear, and depression.
    • Point combinations for depression and anxiety; additional information and references.

Module 5 starts by tabling each of the EEV with the emotions they treat. This is then swapped around by tabling each of the emotions with the EEV that can be used to treat. Yáng and Yīn emotions are also separated into the Yáng and Yīn Vessels.

Acupuncture point combinations are then discussed for six emotions – anger, pensiveness, worry, fear, depression, and anxiety. These are discussed in two different ways:

For anger, worry, fear, and depression there is a discussion on the key elements, main/secondary organs, type of emotion, Zàng Fǔ patterns, treatment/explanation, along with a combined point combination using the emotion treatment with one of the EEV.

For pensiveness and anxiety, the structure is the same apart from the combined emotion treatment with the EEV. For these two emotions, they each get a Yáng and Yīn point combination. The Yáng combination is for the acute phase and the Yīn combination is for the chronic phase.

    Module 6

    • Review of module 1 including the Eight Extraordinary Vessels definition, overview, function, when to use, opening and coupled points and warning; module 2 review including Rèn Mài and Dū Mài images, opening/coupled points and functions; module 3 review including Chōng Mài and Dài Mài images, opening/coupled points and functions; module 4 review including Yáng Qiāo Mài images, opening/coupled points and functions.
    • Module 4 review including Yáng Qiāo Mài, Yīn Qiāo Mài, Yáng Wéi Mài, and Yīn Wéi Mài images, opening/coupled points and functions; module 5 review including the Eight Extraordinary Vessels for regulating emotions, stress and mental health, specifically anger, pensiveness, worry, fear, depression, and anxiety.

The Eight Extraordinary Vessels and the associated acupuncture point combinations will be reviewed. With so much content discussed in the first five modules, this final module gives the viewer a chance to process and consolidate the knowledge shown. This will also guide the viewer towards the focal points that will be assessed in the short answer and multiple-choice questions.

    Presenter:

The Eight Extraordinary Vessels (8EV) will be a very important channel system in the days following the pandemic. This time of great upheaval requires us to let go of our habituated way of being and become more of who we are meant to be. It would be a tragedy to go back to “normal” as quickly as possible. To do so would devalue the depth of experience offered to us at this time. The gifts that have come with the challenges need to be carried into world. The joy that comes from a simpler life. The pleasure in the company of loved ones. The deep sense of healing from being in nature.

    Goals and Outlines

  • Participants will review pathways and points associated with the 8EV.
  • Participants will learn the mental-emotional functions of the 8EV.
  • Participants will recognize pathology in each of the 8EV.
  • Participants will learn to create simple, elegant and effective 8EV treatments.
