The eminent release of the 2023 update to the international evidence-based guideline for the assessment and management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) will coincide with 20 years of the main diagnostic criteria for PCOS, the Rotterdam criteria.
As we navigate this era of patient-centered care and evidence-informed practice, acupuncturists need to stay up-to-date with the latest guidance to inform patients and facilitate referrals, along with being equipped with the most recent knowledge from acupuncture research.
Goals and objectives
- 1. Understand the historical progression of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) from Stein-Leventhal in 1935 to the latest updates in the 2023 PCOS guidelines, along with its implications on the management of PCOS;
- 2. Explore the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective on PCOS, including the use of acupuncture points and herbs for symptom management;
- 3. Examine the proposed mechanisms of action for acupuncture in PCOS management and learn how to incorporate this knowledge into your treatment approaches in clinic.
- 4. Review recent acupuncture research for PCOS, including treatment frequency, rationale for acupuncture point usage, main findings from research, and its practical application in everyday clinical practice.
- 5. Develop a strong and up-to-date knowledge base to guide your treatments and your communication with both patients and other clinicians, in order to facilitate referrals.
