This course for acupuncturists introduces a toolkit of bodywork, auricular and needling approaches for use in pregnancy, during birth, and postpartum. Flowsheets for differential diagnosis and treatment planning are provided for normal labor preparation, postpartum care and Cesarean section recovery, as well as disorders and complications of pregnancy including breech presentation, musculoskeletal pain, PUPPP rash, postdates, oligo- and polyhydramnios. Preventive and adjunct supportive approaches are discussed, along with guidelines for urgent referral, for more serious disorders including preeclampsia, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, intrauterine growth restriction and postpartum depression. Hands-on instruction and detailed treatment planning guides are provided for a range of techniques from simple exercises and acupressure that can be taught to family members, to specialized perinatal tui na techniques, ear acupressure seeds, body needles that can be securely taped, and finally electrical stimulation on auricular and/or body needles for difficult cases.

 

Students taking this course will learn to:

  • Increase effectiveness of Breech moxa treatments through appropriate adjunct methods
  • Address problems of too little and too much fluid in the uterus
  • Differentiate deficiency and obstruction syndromes of Yin, Yang, Qi and Blood as they affect labor preparation
  • Use Chinese medicine concepts and hand techniques to provide effective labour support
  • Promote postpartum recovery

  • Pregnancy and Pre-Labor
    • Breech, musculoskeletal pain
    • Oligo/Polyhydramnios (too little or too much fluid)
    • Preeclampsia/Hypertension/HELLP
    • IUGR (small for dates babies)
    • Intrahepatic Cholestasis (ICP) vs. PUPPPS
    • Intrapartum depression
  • Labor Preparation and Postdates
    • Differential diagnosis and treatment (not just ‘all the contraindicated points)
    • Special approaches to preparing for early medical induction or VBAC
    • Home care packages of constitutionally and situationally appropriate acupressure, exercises and activities

    • Tuina and acupressure approaches for family and friends’ births
    • Identifying and working with bony obstruction, slow dilatation, inadequate contractions, spirit/emotional challenges

Claudia Citkovitz, PhD, MS, LAc., has trained some 270 acupuncture students and practitioners in the care of inpatients at NYU Langone Hospital - Brooklyn. Her study of acupuncture during birth (2009) was the first in the US, as was her 2015 PhD study on acupuncture for stroke rehabilitation (2015). Her book, ‘Acupressure and Acupuncture during Birth’ was published in 2019. Claudia is an active practitioner, educator and peer reviewer, serving on the board of the Society for Acupuncture Research (SAR) and the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (ACAHM) and as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine (JICM).
