Here we explore the invasion of cold, the implication of cold lurking in the body interfering with the body’s healthy maternal functions, and how to undo often decades of cold storage. A 'bun in the oven’ is really a proactive preventative look at all matters obstetric through the lens of miscarriage avoidance/ prevention as seen by a senior clinical acupuncturist. Using old wives’ tales from the Chinese past – see what can we do to elegantly, yet profoundly to change the future of the unborn children.

Outline

Setting the Scene – The Pregnancy Context

  1. Importance of using a wellness not an illness model, incorporating a preventative health care, not a biomedical model. (Hence, organ pathology and differential diagnosis to be set aside in favour of health enhancement – which is individualised and yet does follow a pattern of its own: homeostasis).
  2. Well pregnancy – how to achieve it. Importance of all of life Yang Sheng. Especially quality pre-conception care taking in great sperm and both having potentials maximized and BBT’s normal before they start.
    1. Normal menstruation – a marriage of great Qi and Blood production and Circulation.
      • Is she easily fertile, after having a life of easy periods?
      • Does IVF implantation work – or is there a cold belly and nest awaiting the fetus?
    2. Once pregnant:
      • General digestive/sleeping /comfort issues - Yang Qi is not sufficient to cover all her and baby’s needs.
      • Nausea as the digestive process is unable to sustain wellness
      • Tendency to spotting/bleeding/backaches and getting up at night a lot to pee.
      • We start to see the beginnings of various ‘organ’ pathologies here.
      • Likelihood of not sustaining pregnancy/miscarriage
    3. Later in pregnancy
      • Having a weakened system so the placental flow is not optimal.
      • Small for dates/reduced amniotic liquor
      • Back aches and sciatica
      • Pelvic pain including PSD
    4. Birthing
      • Lack of spontaneous energetic birthing
      • Post birth – tendency to haemorrhage, prolapse increased
  3. Role of Yang Qi in the well body. What wastes Yang Qi – hence homework/important self care points of interest. (How not to continue in the wasting cold habits)

PROCESS - What To Do

  1. How to remove cold from a body and why we would. What to do next (increase the Yang - moxa info)
  2. What happens when a woman has a cool belly. Why is it cold? – the oven should be hotter . . . as should her BBT.

SAFETY

  1. What to do to ensure maternal and fetal safety. Includes – increasing maternal Yang immediately.
  2. Moxa pyramids on ginger and pre warmed salt in navel.
  3. What happens if we do not – i.e. ignore the obvious?

Heather, originally from New Zealand, graduated from a Brisbane, Australia college (allied to Dr van Buren’s college in the Netherlands, (ICOM)) in 1979.

Instead of furthering her education in China, she intertwined her acupuncture life with raising four children, birthing them over a gap of 18 years.

This led her to specialize in women’s health issues, branching into all forms of fertility and pregnancy management.

Whilst Heather was co designing, writing and delivering the ACA (Brisbane) under-graduate course in the early 1980’s, she also delivered post graduate seminars, focusing on the Eight Extra Meridians, Obstetric acupuncture (both in the mid ‘80’s, with extensive written researched notes) and the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

Heather is passionate about education and change being part of the healing process, and actively helps those would seek her assistance to move through their own inner blocks, empowering them to own their own healing journey.

She calls upon a mix of vibrational, medicinal and practical tools, acupuncture, naturopathy, Chinese herbs and life counseling.

To this end, rather than continue only in one – to – one practice, Heather is, besides being in a busy infertility/obstetric practice in Brisbane, also currently redesigning infertility and pregnancy e-books and DVDs for the wider audience, to be marketed on her instructive websites, and within all natural therapies practices.

When lecturing, whether it is to her peers, allied professionals, or the consumer audience, she brings all these healing arms into an amalgam to truly fit our modern western context.

Course Reviews

Well done. Great presentation. The moderator was perfect too! ~ David

I found this course to be extremely captivating. Heather is an excellent public speaker. I do feel that the slides were not super clear sometimes as the type was very small and fuzzy, especially in the infographics. Such a bummer because her content was fascinating. I was also a bit perturbed by some of the stuff she said throughout the course about her methods of treatment and things she says to her patients ... I would be way too scared of lawsuits/malpractice to ever practice the way she does. I was also disappointed that she seemed to be selling all of us on her other various e-books and paid website content. Seemed a little gimmicky.

Loved it! ~ Courteney

I really liked Heather's approach to Fertility and her emphasis on Wellness and "old-school" knowledge. I appreciated her sharing all of the interesting information from her teachers as well as from her many years of experience - it is info. that I feel very fortunate to have and will definitely use. I think her presentation, including slides, could be better organized to make the seminar flow better. I also would have liked her just to lay out the different minerals and information as well as the different websites of hers and what to find there, rather than to keep referring to all of this in a less organized way. ~ Robin

I found the course very informative and have already started using a lot of this new knowledge with my pregnant clients :) ~ Jessica

Interesting information. Refreshing to see a practitioner think outside the box and not have to have scientific validation for everything. She has some very valid points of regarding ethics of putting the babies health first via the mother and really bringing back common sense old school principals, such as diet, sleep,...! Presentation felt a little rushed. She a character!!! Kudos to Lorne for moderating this one!

The notes for the seminar could be a bit more structured/organized. Case studies and information/notes tend to be all over the place, jumping back and forth making it hard to follow at times.

Also, although Heather herself is obviously very experienced, her presentation style tends to be rather negative/disparaging at times. So I came away from the lecture feeling informed, but not necessarily inspired as I have been from other presenters. ~ Mun-Yee

Very good presentation and techniques.

Great course ~Irene

Heather did not explain clear enough most of part. Very disappointed. ~Yuko
